Chapter 7: Communities are Ready

Each chapter of the book, The Company Citizen, has footnotes. As most of these are web links they cannot be readily accessed from the book. So here they are. Those numbered ‘a’, ‘b’, etc., are updates: they refer to text between numbered footnotes and not necessarily to the number in their suffix. For example: 14a is a new note which relates to text between note 14 and note 15 but not necessarily to the subject in 14 itself. Go back to ‘The Company Citizen’ here.

There is (growing?) scepticism that local procurement is necessarily the best strategy
as far as sustainability is concerned; the Preston example is regarded (because of its
origin) as ‘Corbynomics’. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/buy-local-corbynomics-won-t-save-struggling-cities-from-post-brexit-uncertainty-6zrl0l7s8 (£)

Social Value: The British Standards Institute reports that: ‘The rising prominence of …
‘social value’ and ‘social impact’ is the result of growing interest in attempting to assess
the kind of difference that organisational activities make. This has further translated into
a proliferation of definitions, tools and approaches to social value, which has led to
duplication of effort, confusion among stakeholders as to the most credible and
appropriate techniques for defining and measuring social value, and, more generally,
a missed opportunity to scale up understanding and impact of ongoing social value
activities with a view to achieving systemic change.’ (Social Value and Impact
Assessment, 2017)

employers could be doing to improve mental health, and that simple measures could
produce a ROI of 9:1 and save the country billions. At a personal level, 300,000
people each year move out of employment on grounds of mental health: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/654514/thriving-at-work-stevenson-farmer-review.pdf (Oct 2017)
